“This shot was taken at the 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival. It was a few weeks after my father passed away and I just went to the festival to escape my grief for a weekend. Just the sheer act of doing something creative and hearing this legendary jazz genius was healing to me. It was my second time seeing Sonny Rollins live and the song St. Thomas means a lot to me. They say the song St. Thomas was based on a song Sonny Rollins' mother used to sing to him when he was a child. Sonny floated around the stage like a white butterfly ''zig zagging'' in it's own secret way in the flickering light of the garden of jazz.”
