Edward Sharpe

"Toronto Urban Roots Festival (2015) was my first opportunity to shoot music outside of Western Canada and resulted in some mild culture shock as I'd never been in a photo pit with more than three photographers before. During the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros set, front man Alex Ebert - who performs under the persona Edward Sharpe - spent most of his time away from the stage. It was total chaos in the pit: over two dozen photographers were stampeding back and forth, repeatedly bumping into each other, trying to get a shot of Ebert who kept dancing his way over the barricade into the packed crowd. Choosing to hang back and capture the disarray from afar, the lights went out at the end of the third song and plunged Fort York into darkness. A few moments later, Ebert re-emerged where I was standing at the far corner of the stage with a single spot-light cascading down on him for mere seconds. I was the only photographer close enough to realize what was happening when I captured Ebert here, right before he jumped back into the frenzy and the photographers were escorted out."
